The Waikiki Banyan is not a luxury condo full of frills, but if you are looking for a clean place to stay with a full kitchen and super-friendly staff within walking distance to all the action, then this is the perfect place. Furnishings are Hawaiian kitsch, but the view of the beach from the top floor made it worthwhile. Only a block and a half from the beach, got there less than 5 minutes. Other reviews that say it's a longer walk either aren't used to walking anywhere, or they are reviewing the wrong place! In fact, except for shopping at Ala Moana or going to see the USS Arizona, we walked everywhere. Public tranportation takes you on the scenic route, but it's cheap ($* plus one free transfer), and we never once needed a cab. Nice place for kids too; saw the pool area/tennis area the last day; we didn't use because we prefer the beach, but it had a snack area that seemed nice. The Banyan also has a coffee shop and a small "quick mart" type store, but again, didn't use because we were too busy checking everything out. Food Pantry is only 5 blocks away. Check out Hee Hing's Chinese restaurant too; 10 minute walk from Banyan with dim sum and pastry carts, pots of black tea and "real" Chinese food for reasonable price. Fresh fish market at International Marketplace (6+ blocks from Banyan, about 10 minute walk) has excellent shrimp, oysters and steak for a GREAT price and you get a PLATTER of food for most entrees, enough for 2. The Banyan has location, location, location. It's closer to Prince Kuhio beach than the "actual" Waikiki beach (all runs together anyway) but again, you can walk everywhere. Would stay again.

Best thing about this hotel is the location! Close to everything, walking distance to all the shops and restaurants. Parking was only 10$ a day. Washer and dryer 1.50 each, beach towels provided (go to 5th floor). The room fit all of our needs, but was seriously out dated....Right out of the 80's. The sofa sleeper was VERY old and uncomfortable and the cushions smelled really bad, like they have never been cleaned before. The cleanliness of the room was barely average. The pool was shaded most of the day. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed my stay, but if your looking for luxury this isn't it, if your just looking for something affordable, a place to shower, sleep, and feed the kids a quick meal, this hotel might be for you.

Overall, this was a very nice property, however can use a few upgrades. The couch in our room needed to be replaced as the cushions kept sinking into the couch. They were closing the pool deck on the Monday before we left for "Emergency Repairs" but posted the news on Saturday. Would have been upset to get there and find that out. The view was fantastic. Paid for the ocean view room, and actually had an ocean view, mountian view and city view. I will stay here again.

We had a great stay at Waikiki Banyan. We took our 3 children (ages 13,11 and 7.) The beds were very comfortable. This could be due to the fact that we did so much during the day that we were too exhausted to care at night. The kitchen was great for snacks, breakfast and making picnic lunches to eat while we were out exploring. The decor was outdated, maybe late 70's, early 80's, but who cares....we were in Hawaii. It was very clean and the shower worked great. That was what was important to us. We were on the 32nd floor and had a view of Diamond Head and the Pacific. Tower I did partially obstruct our view but who cares....we were in Hawaii. We were one block away from Waikiki Beach and a few blocks over from the International Market. We did not mind the walks b/c we would see entertainment along the way in the evenings when the street performers were out doing their activities and it was good exercise. We never had to wait long for the elevator and we always had a quick trip the the lobby. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Actually, everyone who worked on Oahu was friendly and helpful. We have no complaints as far as the hotel or Hawaii goes. We hope to return soon and would definitely consider staying at the Banyan.
